Ok, the reason Obi Wan's body disappeared is because he went on to another dimension and became part of THE FORCE he achieved the ultimate goal for a Jedi which is extreme purity which caused him to be consumed by THE FORCE,in essence he is THE FORCE now. Vader was confused because he had not been trained properly and did not know it could be obtained. This is why Obi Wan can still contact Luke Skywalker any time he needs him. Yoda also achieved the consumption of THE FORCE. Watch the first Trilogy this weekend all of them and you will see.

Remember in Revenge of The Sith at the end when Yoda told Young Obi Wan that he had training for him while he was in exile Said he would help him to communicate with Quii Jon who found a path back to where they were. When Quii Jon died - notice how Obi Wan became stronger - that is how he was able to defeat Vader the first time. He knew that by the 2nd time they met - his stronger powers would be passed on to his son Luke.

We found out in the Revenge of the Sith that Qui-gon had discovered a way to come back after death... he had only partially mastered it before he died (we hear his voice telling Anakin to run), but Yoda, Anakin, and Obi-wan completed the mastery and were able to come back in a holographic form. Having your body disappear was a part of this, for some reason that never was fully explained. I think that they messed up, however, because Anakin's body does NOT disappear, and he DOES come back. But the theory holds true in the books and in the movies, for the most part.

From what I understand Obi-Wan was one of the few Jedi who actually was able to become One with the force. If you recall in one of the newer Star Wars, Yoda mentions to Obi-Wan he has some additional training for him to master during his exile, "an old friend has returned." Yoda mentions. Qui-gon Jin (spelling?) had also become one with the force and had been communicating with Yoda. So Obi Wan having completed that additional training during his exile also became One with the force and was seen in spirit form in Return of the Jedi speaking to Yoda and many other Jedi at the very end of the same movie

1. Because it was a PG rated movie and they did not want a dead body in it.
2. Because it was the first movie and they thought wow he'll disapear and become some faceless voice in Luke's mind.
and 3. There were no graphics capable back then to split a man in two like they did in episode one with Darth Maul.

For the same reason Yoda's did. In the Sci-Fi world of Star Wars they go to the afterlife when they die. That's why he disappeared.

I agree that it was him becoming one with the Force. He tells Vader that if he defeats him, he will become more powerful than he's ever known.
He lets Darth kill him, so that way he can be with and protect Luke at all times.
