A casement window cranks open. Double hung windows slide up and down with a latch in the center.

Casement windows are the ones that crank open & closed, either vertically or horizontally. Double hung windows are the ones that slide up & down in their frames.
Casement widows form a better weather seal around them, & are more secure from intrusion than double hung windows are.

Casement windows are hinged on one of the vertical sides.
Strictly speaking, double hung windows are sash and case windows in which there are two sashes and both top and bottom sashes are "hung" - i.e. suspended so that both can open, sliding up and down in channels and counterbalanced so that they can be left at any intermediate position without slippling back down. The couterbalances run in hidden channels behind the casing of the window and are attached to the appropriate sash by sashcords.

I believe casement is just a single-pane window that slides up and down. Double-hung windows are the ones that pull out to make them easier to clean.
