OK, I'll assume you don't know anything about the sport and that you tefer to the 15-player Union code of rugby (there are a number of codes)...
Two teams with15 players a side. At the opposite end of the field there is a goal area (the opposing team's goal area) where you can score 5 points if you can exert downward pressure on the ball on the ground with any part of your upper body. The opposing team try to stop you or take back the ball so they can try get to your team's goal area. This 5 points is called a try. After a try your team can add another 2 points if on of your team members can kick the ball over the cross bar of an H-shaped structure, called the poles. This kick is called a conversion. When the opposing team transgress the rules, your team can also kick either at poles (3 points - called a penalty) or out of the field. The latter result in 8 members of each team (the forwards) lining up next to each other where the ball went out. Its called a lineout. One guy from your team throws in the ball and the two teams compete for it. When a player kicks out the ball at any other time, the opposite team can throw in the ball.
The ball can go forward at any time from a player's legs (counts as a kick) but is only allowed to go backward from the upper body. If it does go forward from the upper body, it called a knock-on. Then play stops and the forwards of the 2 teams form a scrum. This is when they bind together in a certain way and push against each other. One guy of the team that hasn't faulted can throw in the ball into the middle (by the feet) of the scrum. The player of each team that's right in the middle of the scrum try to hook the ball towards their side with their feet. In a scrum the ball can only be handled by the feet (no hands). Once it pops out the back of the scrum, that teams player behind the scrum picks it up an takes play further. When a player is stopped by the other team he can throw the ball to a team member (backwards, of course) before he goes to ground. This is called a pass. Once he's down, he can't pass anymore and has to release the ball (you guessed it... backwards).
Whenever something happens that stops play, the referee blows on a whistle.
without going into the details of all the rules (there are MANY), one transgression that often results in a penalty is when a player plays on the wrong side of the ball - called offside.
The forwards are usually big, strong players and the backs are fast and agile.
The different positions in a team are:
FORWARDS
Hooker (1x): throws the ball into the lineout and hooks the ball in a scrum.
Props (2x): strong solid guys who anchor the scrum
Locks (2x): tall guys who are the main jumpers in the lineout
Flankers (2x): mobile and strong players on the side of the scrum
8th man: (1x): mobile and strong player at the back of the scrum
BACKS
Scrumhalf (x): receives the ball from the lineout and scrum
Flyhalf (halfback)(1x): good kicker who dictates backline play
Centers (2x): strong agile runners and good defenders
Wings (2x): the true speedsters
Fullback (1x): also a fast runner, good kicker and good defender.
Each team are allowed 7 substitutes, but once a player is substituted he cannot come back into play. The only exception is when he leaves the field to have a bleeding wound tended to. Once the bleeding is stopped, he can come back.
Every team has a captain. The captain can be any position.
A game is 80 minutes. Two halves of 40 min each. After half-time (10 min break) the teams change sides on the field.
Now go watch a game on TV and see if you can understand what they're doing.
Word of warning, tho: THIS GAME IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE.
