Because it shouldn't be the government's job to use other people's money to rebuild a city that will always be on the brink of destruction from large storms. For those who want to live there, why shouldn't they pay for it themselves? Ask why you want to live there? Is it because of the atmosphere? If that's the case, shouldn't the business (restaurants, stores, clubs, etc) that make the city what it is pay for their own repairs as an investment, and then help pay (or provide incentive in the form of making the town livable) for their customer base to return.

Who said the government is responsible for fixing everything? I just want my street plowed and free of snow. Beyond that, I would rather not have much interference from the idiot politicians.

Before any rebuild of New Orleans can go ahead, the US government needs to find out for sure if such a rebuild would be financially viable.

The research at New Orleans so far, reveals that the levy walls were weak and their foundations not deep enough to withstand the force of the 20-feet high wall of water coming at them. New Orleans could not and will not be able to withstand a Level-One Hurricane, never mind the Level-Six to Eight which hit it.

When the city of New Orleans was first built by the French, they built their city, now the French Quarter, on the only available high ground. This area was virtually untouched by Katrina and still remains in very good condition, in spite of the battering it withstood. The rest of New Orleans is built mostly below sea level, which means that the levies must take the full force of any hurricane which comes and also sea level rises which will certainly come as a result of Global Warming.

Similar flood problems exist here in UK. UK is subject to major flooding during the winter months in most years. Here in London for example, the government have started house building construction in what is called the London Gateway. These houses are being built on the Thames flood-plain. Never buy a house near a river, not in UK, sooner or later that land will flood. Much of London, where I live, is subject to potential flooding.

The government does not have unlimited amounts of money, we may be the richest nation in the world but we still have limits. we are funding a war, increasing military funding to stay in the lead, we are funding space projects,( A space weapons race has begun according to Russia) education, and countless other things. New Orleans is in the process of reconstruction, just be thankful the government has done what they did so far. because if you were in a country such as China, they would not give you or anyone much of anything to aid in reconstruction. be thankful our govt did anything, more will be given later on when we can afford the extra financial aid.

i have self assurance Hezbullah will win that race. they have alot more desirable funds, a lot of it from the U.S. in reality, and a lot less felony wrangling to handle. also, their criteria for being "rebuilt" will be a lot more desirable modest than those of the hot Orleans sufferers the position there'll be many who isn't evaluate themselves thoroughly rebuilt and chuffed till they have a minimum of as a lot cloth wealth as they'd in the previous, plus regulation suits, and Plasma television's. P.S. i for my area do no longer approve of what Hezbullah does, yet lots of the different answerers do not look to maintain in mind that they're a 'humanitarian' agency a minimum of by technique of their personal description and do in reality help their communities, inspite of if in elementary words to win more desirable contributors or sympathy. Their military understanding and techniques are supposedly only an extension of their favor to assist and guard their communities.

The government is throwing away all the money on Iraq. Imagine if all the funds we've spent over there were instead used to help New Orleans........

Probably because New Orleans has a large black community and the Republican Government are a bunch of racist bigots who only look after their own ie;middle & upper class straight white idiots who voted them into power.(Or at least that's how it seems to a gay, white, working class woman from Manchester England who fully supports the Democrats!!).

Why spend good money recreating a ghetto?
The hurricane did the US government a big favour by wiping-out a 'minority' group they themselves were unable to do.
Remember photographs of the looters?..

This is a bigger problem than most people think and it will take time.
Sea levels are rising all the time, maybe the US should tackle this problem first.
