I did some washing earlier and just hung them up. All is well but one sock that has random holes in it and bits of grey. Looks like its started to decompose or something but I only bought the socks the other week! and the othe one is ok. Why is this?

It is a victim of the sockant. A tiny little insect that lives in the washing machine and chooses socks at random. It isn't a very greedy little creature, but it picks it's victims carefully. The only way to get rid of it is to call in the sockant exterminators - who charge exorbitant prices. Or buy a new washing machine.

In my opinion quality has a lot to do with why your socks are getting holes. The better quality the better the weave. There is one other thing that may contribute and that is your toenails. If you have cut your toenails and you have one sharp corner on your nail it may cut the threads and then in the washing machine the threads pull apart.

At least they were all there. My machine eats a sock or two each time I wash so I wind up with socks without partners.

It could be because so many fabrics today are made thinner & cheaper. It could also be that the agitation on your machine is very aggressive - we have a washer we're not really fond of bc it seems to eat the clothes so I do everything on gentle.

Try to throw them in a mesh lingerie bag, zip up and throw them in the washer and see if that helps.

I've had similar problems ... my only theory is that either the socks were catching on something in the washer or the cotton was getting stretched.
My conclusion ... i'm still non the wiser really

Some detergents have strong oxidants that attack delicate clothing. Change the detergent or wash them by hand.

Or, the machine itself may be snagging them if the drum is slightly off centre,. Wash them in a pillowcase or tie-bag.

depends on the fabric and style of sock

it also can be caused by the setting in the dryer---try a more delicate setting

this has happened to my socks many times

Did the washing machine attack it? You could try washing your socks in laundry bags (or a pillow case).
