I have a portable 2.5 inch harddisk.
Recently, it has been giving me problems.

I am able to view the file directory very easily but it takes a long time to access the file itself.

I am also unable to copy or paste huge items into the harddisk.

What is the cause of the problem and how to solve it?

May it be the external case that is causing the problem? I can't reformat as all my files that I have not backup are on it.

Thank you!

Can you further elaborate on changing to generic drivers and why must I add that to the config.sys?

If your computer has an AMD CPU, and Viatech USB Host Controllers; changing the USB Host Controller drivers to standard or generic drivers, may work. Sometimes, putting a line in config.sys, helps. ie. "lastdrive=m"
