for that much, you could have easily gotten a tank-less water heater. next time get several quotes before using a plumber.

The cost you have incurred is not completely outragous. A little high, but not outrageous. When my company changes out a water heater, extra charges are incurred for closets, shut off valves, extra lines being run, limited accessability, on shelves, and many more things. Plus you need to add in the cost of a heater supplied by the plumber. They use better brands and models than home improvement stores offer. Also was the work done on a weekend? On call or after hours prices are much higher than when the job is done during regular business hours. Before you go nuts on the company, contact them and ask for an itimized reciept for the work that has been done. Then if you feel it is still out of wack call the company and talk to a service manager and dicuss it with them. You may get farther than if you immidiately start trouble by calling people that probably wont be able to do a thing for you in the end. The service managers and the company itself are the ones who set prices. Not to say that their service tech has not overcharged, but if they do not hear from you they will never know that you are displeased and therefore cant do anything about it.

I replaced my own 60 gal hot water tank, purchased at Ace Hardware, for about $250 including a few fittings. It took me not more than 2 hours, and I'm not a plumber, just a handy type of guy. I think you've been had, and would certainly complain to the company you purchased from, although I don't know what good it will do once you've paid. I doubt the BBB will help either, they have no clout. Your big mistake was letting them do the job without getting prior bids.

It sounds like a rip off to me. 8 hours times two men at $70 per man hour= $1120 MAX. add another $100 in materials. You are looking at $1220 and not a penny more. Tell him you want the invoice to be broken out for time and materials. Don’t pay him. If you did (pay him), stop payment on the check or credit card. He will threaten to sue you, but let him sweat a little. Tell him you will call the better business bureau if the invoice is not reduced by half. And that you will see him in court.
Oh, and you know there will be other plumbers lurking around here saying that the price is justified. Given the info you present, it does not seem so. You do the math.

Depends on what type of heater you had installed?Did it include the heater and parts? It does sound high, installing a water heater is a basic plumbing job unless it's gas.You can do this yourself with a little effort. Some states however will not allow homeowners to do plumbing unless they are licensed.

okay there is price of parts and then labor---i live in chicago which is pricy too and this would cost about 800 roughly
sounds like you were overcharged
i would contact their head or if it is a coporate type place
if none of those work you can always complain to like a plumbers union or to the better business bureau

email me the name of the company. We can talk. I know this stuff. A flat fee or quote should have been given. Why did you tell them to just do it?
