Other than the statistics, it's good to note that most of the damage was a result of the levees breaking because the local government embezzled the money for the levees and they were not made as strong as they were financed to be.

Other scandals surfaced with William Jefferson getting rescue crews to leave the needy in order to help him get the $90,000 hidden in his freezer that he'd gotten as a payoff for his much publicized corruption scandals.

Also Ray Nagin, the mayor of New Orleans, left town and stranded the locals while letting the rescue buses get flooded instead of using them to rescue the poor masses.

Then there's the Governor, Blanco, who wouldn't let the Red Cross and National Guard in until it was too late.

All of this corruption resulted in over $80 billion being sent out to fix the area, making it the costliest disaster in US history. FEMA was not supposed to come in until all other resources were exhausted, but they ended up with most of the blame thanks to the biased media.

Oddly, Nagin got voted back into office by the very people he abandoned to die. I guess they don't hold a grudge.

So the hurricane itself did very little damage when compared to the damage the Democrats in office did to the city of New Orleans. It was good that this corruption was exposed, but the same corrupt officials are still there, so the people didn't learn from their mistake and voted them back into office.
