Kitty:
There are many publishers out there and believe me, it is hard to find one. I spent two years and many, many manuscripts sent with only three replies to the negative. One took three years to reply? Just type in (Canadian) USA or English Literary Agency's and try some of these. If your work is excepted there are no charges to you. They will give you upfront $ and a percentage on books sold. Usually about 15%. Best selling authors can demand much, more. Good luck.
I went the self publish route. Very hard row to hoe. It worked for me only because I am retired and had time to do many book signings.
I write this mainly to warn you about the bad guys out there trying to take your money for nothing. Check (Warnings & Cautions for Writers) May save you some headaches.

While you could approach publishers directly (many list on their websites whether or not they accept unsolicited manuscripts), in most cases it's best to use an agent to find your book a publisher. Reputable agents will NOT charge you anything until your book is sold, so be wary of the many on the market who try to take upfront fees.

Try a blog like http://misssnark.blogspot.com to start learning about the industry. Certainly consult the Worst Agent list at Writer Beware (http://www.sfwa.org/beware/) before you sign with anyone.

Good luck!

How about you mail or take it personally to a company like ...Random house or something. They read it, decide if they want to publish it, and then you go with the flow. I've never actually done it, but I read a book on it.
Hope that helped at least a little.

send your work to a few publishing companies. then see which ones like it and which ones don't. then decide from there. it can take years to find a publisher that will like your work though, so dont get discouraged if you are rejected over and over. (btw, you might want to get it copyrighted before you send it anywhere, though)
