We stayed there 4 years ago. It is nice with a good beach. The harbour is attractive with lots of boat trips on offer. If you can hire a jeep more the better to explore the numerous villages and beaches and drive up the mountains (in a careful way). There is a famous gorge (cant remember the name) which is incredible; you can drive through or go on an organised trek. look on line or buy a guide book. We loved Crete, the people were friendly and we had a wonderful time. It is really worth exploring if you have the time and are able.

Hello dear!
Rethymnon, is a super place: a large village/ a small city!
Rethymnon has continuous history of thousands of years, thus you can have sightseeing in the city but also around is great! Depending on how long you stay, you can arrange for tours that would please you! Visiting natural (Psiloritis, the new dam, beaches, ...), archaeological (there are several within an hour travel), cultural, historical (the fortress, monastery of Arkadi, ...), agricultural, religious (churches and monasteries) and other places can be among your choices.

Forget Rethymnon! Sitia is the best bet, few tourists and excellent lodging. You can visit Vai, the only palm tree forest in Europe, and Itanos (by far the best beach on Crete) where you can swim along ancient minoan ruins, and the water is so clear you think you are in a swimming pool! Sitia!

I found it a beautiful town... lots of friendly people and good food. Also has really pretty narrow streets in the old town... see the following link for a photo I took there: http://www.360travelguide.com/360VirtualTour.asp?iCode=cre88
Platanes beach is also great... another panoramic photo here: http://www.360travelguide.com/360VirtualTour.asp?iCode=cre81
It's also got some amazing old Venetian architecture such as this gate leading to the old town: http://www.360travelguide.com/360VirtualTour.asp?iCode=cre86
Have fun!
