He allowed the death to let him merge with the Living Force so that he could help guide Luke better and be with him when he needed him the most. If Obi-Wan had just lost the fight with Darth Vader, he may have simply died as Qui-Gon Jin did in Episode 1. But he steadied himself and prepared for his death. Remember in Revenge of The Sith at the end when Yoda told Young Obi Wan that he had training for him while he was in exile
Said he would help him to communicate with Quii Jon who found a path back to where they were. When Quii Jon died - notice how Obi Wan became stronger - that is how he was able to defeat Vader the first time. He knew that by the 2nd time they met - his stronger powers would be passed on to his son Luke.

His motivation was Luke, the son that he never had. His affection for the boy is obvious, and Vader must be turned or destroyed. By discorporating (leaving his body) Obi-wan makes it appear that Vader has killed him, leaving Luke with a motive to continue learning the force and serving the rebellion.

1 Because he knew Luke needed to learn to survive on his own, with only limited help.
2. Because it merged with the Force.

He knew that he could be of more help to Luke if he were to become one with The Force. So he allowed himself to be killed and from that point on, he was with Luke . . . always as The Force.
