When the season starts this year 2007.
The deal hasn't been signed as of yet but they say it will soon. Senator Kerry of Mass is objecting for the cable TV segment.

It would actually be 2008. Baseball wants it in place then because they want to launch their own channel - ala the NFL Network. Directv says that they will add it to the basic lineup, where cable companies (the major ones at least) say they want it to be part of a premium package. So this would be MLB's way of sticking it to the cable companies for not adding their channel (which is planned for 2009), or in a more likely way, to have the cable companies change their plans and add it to the basic cable linup.

While early on there was talk of a DirecTv only deal with MLB Extra Innings. I have seen no indication of it actually happening as of yet. The deal is lucrative to MLB but of course leaves the fans in the dark. Canadian fans will still be allowed to view on cable. Im not sure if this will happen or not. But DirecTv will pull out everything to get this deal. I suggest you switch the Directv now. :)
