ive been here 8 months and now they're making me take it off. are they allowed to do that, since they didnt say anything in the beginning?

Yes. They can change their policies whenever they want. It's their business.

You can choose to comply with the new policy, and perform your duties without the lip ring, or you're also free to politely decline, and seek a more accomodating employer.

I work for an employment agency and can tell you this. Yes they can ask you to remove it depending on what type of position you are working. For reason such as, you work a position that the jewelry could be a hazard or dangerous, you work a position that requires a specific dress code and they decided to enforce it, you work a position that requires a clean cut, front desk image. Check your hire papers for your dress code. See what it says there. You may be able to fight the issue, but make sure it's worth loosing your job. The employer almost always wins. Good luck.

They are sick of looking at that thing all day long . Not everybody finds a lip ring cool .
If you value the job take the fool thing off and act like a successful employee that also cares about an image .

Companies want maturity. Reasonable or not, a conservative appearance is seen as an indicator of that. While your lip ring may not be a genuine sign of immaturity, your willingness to make this a major issue is.
