Interesting question. Apparently, this is commonly used in England, although I've never heard it myself. I think that, phonetically, "Jaspers" is much easier to say. "J" like "Ch" is a plosive fricative, very fast and forceful, much more so than "W". The addition of the "er" at the end puts some distance between the two "s" or sibilant sounds. "Wasps" is a bit of a tongue-twister, while "Jaspers" flows easily off the tongue. Essentially, the phonetics have been modified to create ease of use.

THe Oxford English Dictionary refers to Jasper as a striped mineral so maybe the connection is there
