Some rules are really essential for maintaining a society, but many rules go too far. The thing is, you often can't tell what "too far" is until the rules are in place.

Even at the level of the family I think most have too many rules. My way of raising my kids was to have a minimum of rules, but make those be the important ones. Treating other people kindly, fulfilling your responsibilities, etc. This (and some other things) has resulted in a family where our teenagers are happy people who are a pleasure to be around rather than fighting all the time. Many families have so many rules no one could ever follow all of them successfully. That results in fights over ridiculous things.

I recall a relative getting into a huge fight with her son because he ate an apple after 8pm and their family rule was no food after 8pm. To me this was a sad thing- fighting over an apple. They both felt horrible afterwards and this was just one fight of many over similarly pointless things. Lots of families have rules like that and they have arguments to go along with them.

When you get to the government level you've got layers and layers of laws - many that are useless or damaging- but the new legislators are only interested in passing their own new laws to make a name for themselves. No one does any house keeping to get rid of what isn't working.

What do you think will happen is rules are nowhere to be found. When everyone is guided according to their own preferences. When no one but you can tell whether you're doing the right thing/not. When no one can get wrong because no one says they're wrong.

And in such a circumstance, I hope you still want to live... in a world where you have absolute freedom (which is kind of ironic, because you aren't really free. Why? Fear that other people will do anything they like against you. No rules, no good)

It is because of peoples demands on our society that rules are required, the more demands the more rules, bleeding hearts, environmentalists, and so called saviours of the world create most of the rules we have to deal with everyday life today, so if you are looking to blame someone for all of these rules those above would be a good start.

There are far fewer rules regarding human conduct now than there ever have been, at least for the majority of humanity.
