I have cometo the end of my patience with pmt and fed up of crying and being irritable every months so am trying the pill. It's made me worse but have heard this is normal for the begining. Does anyone know how long before hormones are supposed to level out?

Some contraceptive pills can make your PMT worse. The effect of any given pill will vary from woman to woman. I don't think I would change a patients pill prescription much quicker than every three months unless side effects appeared significant.

You also need to be careful when you get a change pills, many pills have different names but contain the same hormones. If your GP is not paying attention to this he may waste your time. ( regrettably I have seen this done a number of times!) To avoid this make sure you keep the data sheet from inside each pack, this has the name of the 2 hormones in your pill. As long as one of the 2 is different it is reasonable to try each new pill.

Other alternatives to the pill are B6 though the dose needs to be 50 micrograms a day.
Progesterones like norithisterone (Primolut N)
Diuretics like Spironolactone. ( considered a bit old fashioned).
Each of these is said to help 70% of women.

Evening primrose is often recommended but controlled studies failed to suggest it was useful. Also Prozac was licenced and used for a while, it did work but it was later decided that it's risks might outweigh any benefits, it is no longer licensed for this indication but I have still sometimes seen it used.

I'm not sure how long it takes, for me the pill never worked and made me worse but I stayed on it for years as I had no other choice untill things got really bad and had to stop it.
I would say though you need to give it at least 3 months.

I used to get raging PMT but haven't done now for around 15 years since I started taking evening primrose oil. It took around two months of taking it daily before it started to work and I've been fine ever since.

Have you tried Dianette, it's very good for that kind of thing, shouldn't take to long to work. If you problems centre around your periods why not take the pill continuosly so that you no longer have them. It is perfectly safe to do so and in fact the pill was designed to be taken that way.
