THIS IS AN URBAN MYTH!!!!!

The only thing you do by turning your computer off is SAVE ELECTRICITY!!!

Modern computers are not going to be significantly affected by power cycles. It is more important to have conditioned power feeding your computer from a quality UPS to avoid under-powering your power supply, which WILL reduce its life.

Sleeping computers still chew up several watts of power, especially monitors.

Make sure you do a gentle shutdown from the start menu, and don't just power off with Windows running. That risks hard drive corruption.

(Has nothing to do with being green, but it might save you money!)

Highly debated question, but it is a personal choice. I leave mine on 24/7, but if I tell you just to leave it on it will have the green folks in here talking about conservation. I haven't seen a difference in my electric bill and my desktop computer has been down for 2 months.

Most dangerous time for a computer is when first started up, because of possible power surge that could cause damage to components, but this is rare and unusual.

Hey green person down below me. I knew you would show.

" Amanda H " gets my "Thumbs Up " !

Wear & tear on anything that generates heat is accellerated by frequent HOT to COLD & vice versa.... to some degree or other.

By the time it takes a toll on a modern PC ... the unit will likely have become obsolete long before....

I wouldn't worry about it.

Believe it or not but yes it is bad for your system...
It is much better to turn on the system and leave it on, even in hibernation or standby mode.
Constant turning on and off promotes compents to over heats and be damaged.

Think of it like a lightbulb, they last longer turned on, except a pc can cool it's self down.

That should be fine. The only problem you might have would be with either the power supply or the power button, but you should be fine doing this.
