"The English are best!" by Flanders & Swann
The English the English the English are best
I woudn't give Tuppence for all of the rest!
The Scotsman is mean, as we're all well aware
And bony and blotchy and covered with hair
He eats salty porridge, he works all the day
And he hasn't got bishops to show him the way!
The English, the English, the English are best
I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest.
The Irishman now out contempt is beneath
He sleeps in his boots and he lies through his teeth
He blows up policemen, or so I have heard
And blames it on Cromwell and William the Third!
The English are noble, the English are nice,
And worth any other at double the price
The Welshman's dishonest and cheats when he can
And little and dark, more like monkey than man
He works underground with a lamp in his hat
And he sings far too loud, far too often, and flat!
And crossing the Channel, one cannot say much
Of French and the Spanish, the Danish or Dutch
The Germans are German, the Russians are red,
And the Greeks and Italians eat garlic in bed!
The English are moral, the English are good
And clever and modest and misunderstood.
And all the world over, each nation's the same
They've simply no notion of playing the game
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won
And they practice beforehand which ruins the fun!
The English, the English, the English are best
So up with the English and down with the rest.
It's not that they're wicked or natuarally bad
It's knowing they're foreign that makes them so mad!

You answered this yourself, Land of hope and glory is "English", not British. God save the queen excludes many too, have you even heard the line about "perfidious Scots"?
Maybe time for something new.
You can't think of a new British anthem though just for England sporting occasions, after all Britain is far more than just English.

I think that the National Anthem has always been a dirge. At one time several stirring songs could have replaced it but the country has changed. Who could sing Land of Hope and Glory or Rule Britannia without feeling ridiculous? And Jerusalem, wonderful song but 'green and pleasant land' is hardly appropriate nowadays. Best sing them at the Last Night of the Proms when we can all be nostalgic.

Why should it be an English song when its the British national anthem? Would you be just as happy with Scotland the Brave? It should be left as God Save the Queen or if it has to be changed changed to Rule Britannia. I peronaly think its ok for Englands teams to sing whatever they want. Even better if all British teams sung GSTQ though.

I hope you don't mind an American voice in response. I like Land of Hope and Glory (though most Americans would only recognize it as the 'graduation song'). I also like Rule, Britannia but I imagine that would be shot down as being 'too imperialistic'. I believe too many people would also protest Land of Hope and Glory simply because of the line "God who made thee mighty, make the mightier still". Once again, it will be 'too imperialistic' and 'too religious'. It is a shame since both are very stirring anthems.

I agree with you about Land of hope and glory but the Scots and Welsh might see it as an English imposition.
God Save the Queen is such a dreary tune and I find the fawning words embarassing and outdated.

I like God Save The Queen. But like 'Bloke' I'm a bit of a royalist. Hearing the national anthem makes me very proud to be English.

Hello, yes I agree with you, something like Land of Hope & Glory it certainly is a stirring tune, as is Jerusalem. The only trouble is there are too many PC people out there who would bound to pick fault with either of these and say they are rascist or something else. Definitely get rid of God Save the Whatever.

To epitomise all things English - "Ernie, The Fastest Milkman in the west" by Benny Hill. A classic!! Can you imagine the smile that would bring onto anyone's face when sung loud & proud, by black or white, hindu or christian, gay or straight. It brings tears to my eyes thinking of it. All together now....Ernie.......
