Not really but that depends on where your tank is located and how cold the house gets. It is never a bad idea to have one just incase.
Remember all cold water fish can withstand extreamly cold temperature shifts which is why they are classified cold water.
If your fish start schooling in one area of the tank or another, they may be telling you they prefer a certain temperature and a heater will evenly distribute a constant temperature in your tank.
A thermometer (one that is on the INSIDE) ofyour tank is ALWAYS a good idea to have.

I've never had either, although the tank came with a heater. It might be helpful to know the temperature of the water, especially if you have a light on in the tank. Lights shouldn't be used for more than 8 hours and they can heat the water surprisingly quickly. Make sure you change the water regularly, but never dump the fish straight from one water temp to another. If you can, float them in a plastic tub or bag on the surface before putting them in the tank/ bucket/ wherever. Always keep some of their original water in the tank and wash the filter etc. in a bucket of water taken from the tank, it gives them bacteria that they need. Some of my fish are four and going strong just on this basis. (I have koi, oranda and a rudd.)

I also have a thermometer in all my goldfish tanks (yet this is in simple terms my own decision) i do no longer use warmers in my tanks. Our abode remains consistent at seventy 4 all winter long so room temp is in simple terms great The canines days of summer time is what I hardship a pair of little. whilst the temp is a damp ninety+ outdoors and my tanks start to upward thrust to stages i don't sense mushy with, i'm going to very slowly decrease them - for this reason my decision for a thermometer

Fish like cold water. If you put a heater or thermometer in their tanks then that will make the water too warm. Fish generally don't like warm water so all you need to do is put water that is not freezing but is at a medium temperature

NO! Don't get one! Hence the cold water aquarium part, you shouldn't need one. For fish like goldfish and fancy goldfish you don't need a heater. Don't get a chiller either. Just get a filter, and do 20% water changes every fortnight. That should keep them happy and healthy.

DO NOT USE A HEATER,it will kill your COLD WATER fish!
I don't use a thermometer and my fish are healthy and growing well, but if you wish you can, just remember it is not something you have to have!

I couldn't tell you, for sure, but, I wouldn't have THOUGHT so. It IS a COLD WATER aquarium, you're talking about, - isn't it?
