There's plenty of sites where you can listen to music for free without having to pay or download anything (assuming you have the right software installed on your computer to play those files but they run on basic stuff that should be on every computer).
Seeing that we all have a Yahoo! account for being able to use Yahoo! Answers there's Yahoo! Music as your first choice. They have artist radio, some music videos, samples of songs and an online store to buy songs from.
Another good option would be MTV's site. It's a little tricky navagating their site but you'll find what you want eventually. They have more of a selection that Yahoo! and they have possibily one of the largest original music video collections on the web. Their services are similar to those of Yahoo! but you don't need to create an account or anything to use MTV's site.
Another great option that I've run across from musical taste exploration is Pandora Internet Radio. They have a wide variety of songs and will explore your music tastes based upon thumbs-up/down ratings just like what Yahoo! Answers has. From their site you can download the individual song from iTunes or you can purchase the whole CD/album from Amazon.com.
There's also plenty more sites like Napster, Rhapsody and many more that have free services, you really just have to keep an open mind and ears to see what is best for you.

Try www.pandora.com or www.last.fm. These are inventive websites where you can type in the name of a favourite artist and they will then create a playlist for you of similar artists. So not only is the music free, but you get to listen to heaps of new tunes that you will like.
