I've been working in the publishing industry as a senior designer for nearly 8 years now and have come to a point where I want a change in career. Before I started working in publishing, I was a keen artist and loved to paint and draw but felt that a job as an artist would not pay well for a living!

The next option I would like to get into is 3D modeling and trying to get into the computer games industry as a character designer of some sort.

The problem is, the games industry is becoming highly competitive and was wondering if it is strange for a female to be working in such an industry?

If you're a good designer and you have a lot of imagination than you'll have a great success in gaming industry. You don't need to know about coding or how a graphical card works...If you have some knowledge about 3DStudio Max or Maya (or something similar) it whould be perfect. I advise you, if you go to an interview, to have some drawing representing some (fictional) characters or some landscapes ...Good luck.

no,its just a myth that comapnies liem ubisoft and electronic arts are dominated by men ,some of the best coders are women and there is allways openings for women in the computer game industry
if i can give you some advice, before you go to any software houses, download or buy as many new game titles as you can,the times i have messed up at interveiws by not doing enough research on the company i was trying to work for
i mean have you heard of call of duty, just cause,black,doom3,quake4,these are some of the latest games on the p.c,also you need to understand games before designing them, which also includes knowing how graphic cards work, such as the amount of pixel pipelines a card has and the pixel and shader model it has,go to nvidia,s website(http://www.nvidia.com/page/home.html),you can find out some invaluable info on this site
good luck in your future choice of carrer

It can be very difficult to get a foot the door of the games developers, but if you have the skill and talent, I am sure you will be able to crack it.

There are some agencies that supply staff for games developers, (like for example DataScope: http://www.datascope.co.uk/) try them as well as applying directly to companies.

Also, before you start applying, put yourself together a collection of example work to show them. Most prospective employers will expect this.

It will help to get yourself up to speed (though, I would guess you already are!) on the most common tools too. For 2d, Adobe Photoshop is de-facto and for 3d, look at Maya and 3d Studio Max.

Good luck!

It is not strange at all for a female to work in the gaming industry. It is a pretty standard thing.
