PELE... although there came many others afterwards who had better technique, better physical strength and better record... but PELE opened the field... he made us enjoy the Brazilian way of playing football (as we call it in the rest of the world)... and his goals are still the best!

Pele- Just look at his matches. Without a doubt the best. And second I reckon definitely has to be George Best, these guys were legends in their hay-day.
Pure class!

In english footy we have dozens of legends: Shearer, Gascoigne, Lineker, Rush, Owen and Beckham (as a few to say the least).
Brazil is the other country with tonnes of class players (many current ones are superb- some of the best we've ever seen_: Ronaldiniho, Ronaldo, and Roberto Carlos have all been spectacular and their matches are usually pure joy to watch.
I'm leaving out Maradona because he's a tw*t.

At what position?
Zizou Zidane, David Beckham, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Pele, Roberto Baggio... and those are just the ones I've heard of!
Diego Maradona (ARG) was a great middie, but he was a cokehead so he doesn't count.

David Beckham: best free kicker and crosser of all time. Nobody can put bend on the ball like he can. And now, he's going to do what Pele couldn't: Make football popular in the US.

Pele
Because he was not only great on the field. He was the greatest ambassador the game has known.
Pele carried himself with great class, worthy of any and all praises bestowed upon him.
Good Luck finding a better man / player.
