I am going in May and as I understand it, if you are a UK passport holder and visiting for a holiday you need at least 6 months left on your passport. The visa can be filled in on arrival in Kenya and costs $50 per person. It is worth getting the US dollars as you will get a poor rate of exchange if you pay by £.

When I went I just filled in a form at the airport and paid 50USD. The customs people seemed to care more about getting the money and clearing the crowd of people than checking everything properly.
I flew in on BA and they had the visa forms for us to fill in before landing.
No need to buy in advance

The Foreign Office website http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1007029396086 has contact details for all foreign embassies in the UK.
Find the contact details for the Kenyan High Commission and speak to them directly for a definite answer. They don't appear to have a website.
