In what year of Law School do students usually take the bar?

The overwhelming majority take it after they've finished law school. They offer it two times a year in CA: July and February. They picked July b/c it gives law students a decent amount of time to study for it after graduation. February is far enough after you get the July results back to study for it again if you need to.

I've never heard of anyone taking it while in school. I imagine it's possible, but it would be stupid to do so. Studying for the Bar in addition to your classes?

That depends upon where you are going to law school and where you plan on practicing. I do not think any law school would encourage you to take the bar exam before you begin you third year of law school. And if I am not mistaken, most, if not all, require you to take the bar after you graduate. You can find out alot about law school and the bar here:

In the last year of law or befor you are being licensed to practice law.
