The "V" means the engine is configured like a "V." In other words, the cylinders are aligned so that the base of all the pistons are along one axis, and they branch up & out, in two parallel formations.

The "8" means it has 8 cylinders. Most cars have 4, 6 or 8 cylinders. The more cylinders, in general, the larger your engine. Larger engines combust more fuel, which deliver more power. V8's are typically in full-size (luxury) cars (like the Ford Crown Vic, Lincoln Town Car) and trucks & SUV's.

Most engines have two valves that go into a cylinder. So, a V8, by default, would have 16 valves. More valves tend to mean more power, since you are sending more fuel into the cylinders.

Most consumers would buy a V8 for power, and they would need that power either for performance or to literally push the big car they want to drive (a large SUV would perform on no less than a V8).

They do consume large amounts of fuel. Since more gasoline is needed to fill a V8's engine, they consume more fuel per mile, and therefore deliver poorer gas mileage than a 4cyl or 6cyl engine.

As the previous poster said, v6 is a six cylinder (6 pistons) and a v8 is an 8 cylinder (8 pistons). V8's are common in trucks because of their power. V6's tend to get better gas mileage. There are instances where some v8's will get better gas mileage than a v6 in a certain vehicle. And there are some v6's out there that make more power than some of the v8's out there. Usually a car with a v8 is purchased for performance. Trucks for the towing or 4x4 capabilities.

As for diesel engines... yes, the v8 designation is still used. I don't know of any v6 diesel engines, but I do know that Dodge uses an inline 6 cylinder cummins engine. I do believe the now discontinued jeep liberty was an I4 diesel. The older mercedes diesels in the US were I5... or inline 5 cylinder diesels.

V is the configuration of the cylinders. The number is the number of cylinders. The higher the number of cylinders, the more powerful the car is and the more it uses up gas. The more fuel you burn, the more power you get. Engines with more cylinders need more fuel.

It is also applicable to a diesel engine.

Other configurations include Flat-4, Inline-4/Straight-4, Flat-6, Inline-6/Straight-6, V8/Inline-8/Straight-8, V10, V12, V16, W12, W16 and more.
The most commonly used ones are the Inline-4, V6, and V8.

Swapping the engine on a 2011 Mustang is more trouble than what it's worth. It will cost you a fortune to do, so you would have been better off buying the 2011 GT model to begin with. If you want a V8 just trade in your V6 Mustang, but you will lose money on the depreciation, plus with the GT model your insurance rates will also go up. So unless you have a big bank account just stick with your current car.

V6 and V8 identify the number of cylinders in the vehicle.
To determine the #, check the label under the hood, or check the owners manuel, or count the number of spark plugs on your engine (be carefull with this method, you may have a double banger which neans you have two spark plug wires per cylinder).
deisel Engines also use cylinders (See the link below for specifics). deisel engines burn more efficiently, therefore they use less fuel. Cheers!

It is the number of cylinders in the engine. The bigger the engine the more fuel you would probably consume, although I have had 6 cylinders take more gas than a V-8.

v6 and v8 detremine the how many cilinders the engine have so v8 engine will be more powerfull than v6 engine and it will effect the fuel consumtion for sure if the engine capacity is larger.

You need to look at some pictures of some engine block configurations.http://auto.howstuffworks.com/camshaft1.htm
Diesel engines are also the same
Why More power and with more power comes the need to use more fuel.
