Birds need water year-round. It's harder for them to find it in the winter months with freezing temps. They do not eat snow and just let it melt... they drink ONLY water. So providing a heated birdbath that will not freeze is wonderful.
More birds die from lack of water in the winter months than from lack of food.

In winter, a bird will use a heated birdbath to drink from b/c it provides a source of liquid water. Birds can get water from snow and ice, but it that take a lot more energy than getting from a heated birdbath.

The heated birdbath is a SUPER idea! You obviously live in an area with really cold winters. Since the birds are already coming to your yard to eat from your feeders, they will appreciate having a clean convenient water source close by. It could even attract new birds that don't come to the feeders.

Snowyday,
I have had birdfeeders and a heated birdbath for several winters. it is great entertainment. The heated water is almost more of a draw than the food. Even though I spent $25 on a heater I'd do it again.

It also looks cool when the snow piles up. There is this little heated pool of water in the midst of the snow, like a hot tub!!

You will enjoy it, snow!

Good luck!

Your right of course! Often times, the water source becomes more popular to the birds as opposed to the bird feeders because they will have a harder time finding water than finding food during the cold spells. I'm sure your neighborhood feathery friends really appreciate it! :)

Most people I know go out and get the freezing water out of the bird bath and put unfrozen clean water back in. Birds need water, yea they know how to peck the ice and find it, but it is nice to help them out!!!!!!!!!!!
