I am a forward caste Hindu, who has suffered from this nearly a decade ago. I'll be lying if I did not admit that it did cause some heartburn at that stage. I'm also aware that my children will face this issue going forward.
Inspite of that, I would today vote for Affirmative Action (NOT Reservations), and that too on economic grounds (NOT Caste, or Religion). I believe in meritocracy, and the right of the best student to get the education he deserves. But before we ask everyone to participate in open competition, we have to ensure that people are competing on a level playing field. Its unfair to ask a rich kid who takes specialised coaching for IIT entrance to compete with another who has not even had access to elementary education.
The current government has taken SC/ST/OBC as a proxy for backwardness. This is quite inaccurate. Given the last 20 years of BSP/SP/RJD domination in UP and Bihar politics, these castes are no longer 'opressed' as they were perhaps at the time of independence. Also, it is important to note the number of poor upper caste kids who cannot afford elementary education. Thus the criteria for support should be economic status, and not caste.
Secondly, the support should be provided where it is needed the most. Not providing elementary education, while guaranteeing seats in IITs (where reserved category candidates routinely face trauma, and are not able to do justice to the opportunity provided to them) is a shameful waste of national resources.
Unfortunately, the current Government wants to play the same card that has succeeded for the erstwhile Janta Dal in the past (it is very interesting to read the words that Congress used in 1991 to denounce reservations: "They are dividing the country on caste lines").
Hope they do not succeed.

For a long period of time certain communities in India were suppressed. To bring social justice we need reservation for scheduled castes. Reservation will certainly bring social justice. To bring parity in the society the process of reservation should be there for 5 to 6 generations. Say 100 years
Of course this may benefit the creamy layers of the backward community, to avoid this, allow reservation only in the entry level jobs in the government sector or bureaucracy and not in education or other areas.

The corrupt and incapable leadership did not make it a priority to provide basic education to all. So they thought, it is better to buy some communities by favouring them by providing cheaper and easier higher education.
In this system, hundreds of poor Indian children are deprived of basic education so that one rich person gets highly subsidised higher education.
All this exploitation of Indian resources by the rich at the cost of poor is promoted by the corrupt, short-sighted and incapable leadership because some among us are easily lured by short term gains.

They have done it to hide their Incompetence in bringing development and achieving higher standard of living of the backward Cast’s and religion’s society. They do not want to expose that only and only because of their ignorance and using those backward cast’s and religion’s people as just their VOTEBANKS these society has remained backward. No doubt today we not only need the policy to bring the selected backward society on the basis of cast and religion but a collective society of POOR persons ignoring the cast and religion.

After all Vote Bank Politics. No political party can survive in India, if it puts a full stop to reservation. Let us see braindrain and we are going back to East India Comapny's age by selling PSUs and inviting a lot of MNCs to setup their business.
Also to satisfy other political parties under whose support the ruling party is surviving. One Common minimum programme they have is to take the country to hell at any cost
