You have the right to buy council properties only! Private tennants have no such rights.

Some housing associations sell houses or offer shared/ part ownership of the house you rent ( part mortgage part rent ) Housing associations are not compelled by law to do this. Only councils are compelled by law to sell to tennants.

Private tennants have no such rights-- who would rent out any house if the tennant had the right to buy.

as far as i'm aware all tenents, whether council, housing association or renting private, have the right to buy. I'm currently in the process of buying my council flat. Though watch out for service charges. The council want me to pay £1800 annually for the up keep of communal areas, garden, entrances etc. you may also be able to recieve a discount of the market price of your property. its worth looking into. good luck

i think you have a problem if you want to buy from a housing association. However, you should go to your local CAb as my friends brother was given some money in lieu by his which meant he was able to put a deposit on another house.
