In terms of volume, the largest cells in the human body are the gametes, or the sex cells. The female gamete, the oocyte (also known as the egg or the ovum), is about 1000 micrometers, or one millimeter, in diameter, which is just visible to the naked eye without the aid of a microscope or other magnification device. It needs this size as nourishment before it implants itself in the uterus. Various other cell types have various other sizes within this range. Most of the cells in the body are too tiny to be seen without a microscope.
(1) Connective tissues help support and join together various parts of the body. Most connective tissue is strong and elastic. Fat cells (or adipose cells) are responsible for the production and storage of fat. The nucleus and cytoplasm are squeezed by a large lipid droplet. White fat cells, characteristic of white adipose tissue, range in size from 25 to 200 microns. They are among the largest cells in the body. (2) Epithelial tissues cover the body surface and so forms the skin. It also lines such body openings as the mouth and throat. Epithelial tissue prevents harmful substances from entering the body. (3) Muscle tissues consist of threadlike fibres that can contract (shorten). Muscle tissue makes it possible for the body to move. (4) Nervous tissues or neurons carry signals and permit various parts of the body to communicate with one another. Neurons come in many different shapes and sizes. Some of the smallest neurons have cell bodies that are only 4 microns wide. Some of the biggest neurons have cell bodies that are 100 micrometers wide. Neurons can be quite large - in some neurons, such as corticospinal neurons (from motor cortex to spinal cord) or primary afferent neurons (neurons that extend from the skin into the spinal cord and up to the brain stem) can be several feet or a meter long. Neurons can be called the longest cells in body!

The largest cells are Betz cells in brain. Betz cells are pyramidal cell neurons located within the fifth layer of the grey matter in the primary motor cortex. These neurons are some of the largest in the central nervous system, sometimes reaching 100 μm in diameter. Betz cells send their axons down to the spinal cord where in humans they synapse directly with anterior horn cells, which in turn synapse directly with their target muscles.

Ova are large...nearly visible with the naked eye. The longest cells are sensory neurons. One cell can have membranes that stretch from your spinal cord out to the tip of your finger/toe. So, in an average person that would be about 3 feet...but imagine the size of that cell in a really tall basketball player!

* The egg is the largest human cell. Once it is fertilized, all other cells begin forming.
* Bone cells help build your skeleton by secreting the fibers and minerals from which bone is made.
* Fat cells store fat. They can shrink or grow. Once you have them you can't get rid of them.
* Muscle cells are organized into muscles, which move body parts.
* Nerve cells pass nerve messages around your body.
* Red blood cells carry oxygen around your body.
* White blood cells fight disease.
