Both sides of the argument have valid points. You don't want kids using phones in class, or being distracted by the usage of phones, or doing drug dealing with phones.
However, the availability of emergency communication is an important issue and should be taken into consideration. One office phone is not sufficient in a Columbine style shooting. You want instant (and I mean INSTANT) contact with police. You can't send little Sally with a hall pass down to room 102 anymore -- your infrastructure is down.
Sure, if you are in Smallville, you think that Columbine won't happen to you. Well, the Amish didn't think that violence would happen to their community, either. They are still tearing down and rebuilding their community's landmarks from where a hostage incident took place. If it can happen there -- it can happen in your community.

No, School children should not be allowed to carry cell phones as this may distract the attention of the student and teacher in the class. Further the advanced featured cell phone can be misused for wrong doings of colleagues.

Yes, they should carry cell phones but should switch it off during the classes. Cell phones are required for emergencies. My daughter's school is a total disciplinarian school which does not allow cell phones.

Not only would it be safe, It is a great idea. Children can have it as a backup in case they are in trouble. They can program their cell phone to talk to whomever they need at any given moment. This will reduce harm, All the best Peter t

I have children. I don't let them have a cell phone. They tell me that they need it but to this date they haven't so far. If there is truly an emergency at school they walk to the office & borrow the school's phone or have a faculty member call me. My children tell me that their friends are constantly text messaging behind their books while their teacher explains that day's subject. As a kid I used to doodle or write silly notes while my teacher's back was turned or while he/she was talking about something to the class. It was simple to get away with that. It is just as simple to get away using the cell phone & text messaging. I don't want to take away from my children's learning because they're too busy text messaging. And you can argue that a responsible young person wont do it but it's like somebody one said that if you put the temptation out there without any supervision they're likely to commit the sin once in a while.

Yes they should. Just in case if anything happened. Like terrorist or the electric went out then they could go to the bathroom and call you. Then come and pick them up.

I think older kids. Mostly those who ride the bus. My daughter has one, she's 13. If she misses her bus, she can call us to picke her up. And, I can go online to see exactly when she uses it. I have, and she's only used it when we've known about it. Which is almost never.
