This is a 5th grade science project. We have googled this a bit but have come up with pretty elaborate and overwhelming projects and sites. She will be doing this on her own and suggestions for websites or materials that a 5th grader can understand and manage are appreciated.

You need a nucleus with 6 protons and 6 neutrons. Styfofoam balls are good. Protons and neutrons are the same size, but make them dfferent colors. The protons have a + charge. You could write that on them. The neutrons do not have a charge. Mix them up, the protons do not like to be near each other.

Surrounding the nucleus you need 2 rings of electrons. There are 2 in the first ring and 4 in the next. Spread them out ,they do not like each other. They have a - charge. They are much smaller than protons.
I have seen 3D models done hanging on a coat hanger. The nucleus hanging in the center and the electrons hanging outside of it. Then the whole thing can hang up too.Bend the body of the hanger to a round shape.

You can get styrophoam balls from a craft's shop pretty cheap, just get different sizes for the different parts of the atom. Then straighten a coat hanger and bend it into a round shape to make the ring for the electron orbit unless you can find some round pieces of sturdy wire.

Toothpicks and ping pong balls.

Use the toothpicks to link the ping pong balls together. Color the ping pong balls to represent electrons, protrons, and neutrons.
