"Communism" is just a word referring to the social system espoused by Marx and Engels, but it existed long before Marx and Engels in many forms.
A kibbutz is "communism" in its most basic form. This is a group of people who live together as equals and share the work and share the rewards of their work. Another form of "communism" is the agro-cooperative, where a group of farmers band together and share the work (on all the farms) and share the rewards (from all the farms). On the kibbutz and the co-op, the collective needs outweigh the needs of the individual, and the individual would probably perish if not for the cooperative efforts of others; the cooperative (community) flourishes because of its numbers, its collective talents, brainpower and - especially - physical work.
It would take one man a year to build a grain silo; it would take 100 men a couple of days...
The ideas espoused by Marx and Engels were worker-orientated and originated with farm workers - later factory workers, and based on the grain silo principle: collective efforts bear more fruit than disparate, individual efforts. They also develop a sense of community and comraderie.
The other kind of "communism" is a regulated community, like the one which once existed in Bourneville, England. The brains behind the operation was a man named Cadbury who made chocolate. His workers were all given all their earthly needs and lived within a community Mr Cadbury built for them (plus a salary), in return for their work. Regardless of status within the Cadbury organization, everybody had exactly the same house, the same salary and the same standard of living. It was truly egalitarian. The reason for this was because it was difficult to recruit a workforce to the plant in those days, so Mr Cadbury came up with the idea of building a city around the plant so people could walk to work and not have to worry about mortgages or rents and other things he believed could impede one's ability to concentrate on their work.
Communism in its purest form is great for the people who believe in it and who do not aspire to outdo the other people in their community. The problem with communism as with all other societal systems is, once power-hungry politicians got their hands on it, they turned this very simple and dare I say beautiful system of people co-existing and helping each other to achieve something as a collective into a corrupt system which completely ignored the basic premise.
The contributions of communism exist pretty much everywhere, but mostly in farm communities. Cooperative farms are still very much evident - and hugely succesfful - in many parts of the world, and kibbutzes have always been - and still are - a major success in the Holy Land.
If governments could keep their hands off communism (kibbutzes and cooperatives) then perhaps there would be many more of them, and we could all see just how good they are for the people who take part.

Communism has given us sociologist alot of argue about, it showed us that a man (Marx) can be remembered for doing nothing but complaining and never giving evidence for his claims.
Most importantly communism has shown us how many insane people there are in the world. (The idea that insanity is doing that same thing over and over again expecting different results each time.) After numerous attempts at creating the perfect communist society and failing miserably everytime and creating wholesale slaughter everytime, there are still people that want to try again and again.
Basically communism has shown us how a good idea in theory can be a disastrous idea in practice.

No true contribution.
An attempt to make everyone help each other, but they took Christ out of the picture and forced people to act like Christians (yes, many false Christians don't say much for Christianity, but the basis of it is Love and that fact doesn't change.)
Working for the good of the whole can't be forced on anyone. It has to come from the heart.

Communism is the exploitation of the people by the state.
To illustrate it a joke about Mao-Tsé-Dong:
One day a journalist asked him why everybody else, his people, was driving a bicycle and him a Mercedes.
His answer: Well, we are all equal but you know, some are more equal than the others.
I was born in Mozambique, an East African country who turned Marxist-Leninist even before the Independence in 1975. I left it in 1986 coz one could not buy anything in the shops; only tomato paste for cooking and in some shops at the country side, women's hygienic pads as well coz women in those remote places, did not use them.
Rice, soap, sugar, cooking oil and cigaretts were a monthly ration. Milk and cassava bread - terrible - once a week. If you would have strong foreign currency, you could buy SA, UK, French, Portuguese, and even some, Mozambican products in special shops for foreigners. One had to have the passprt checked at the entrance. Later they opened the shop to everybody as many people were asking foreign cooperants to by this and that for them while discretely waited outside the shop.
Clothing, was to forget; only if a calamity happened and rich countries would send some. One should take your own fork and knife and napkin to restaurants. And at the majority of bars, snack bars and bar-restaurants, to drink a beer one had to order a meal - just ''stewed'' cabbage 'swimming' in a tomatoish salted water. A country, can you imagine?, with more than 2700 km coast... full of excelent and dellicious 1st cat fish and the best prawns and crabs; rich in tropical vegetables and fruits - exporter of fish, shrimp, oranges, babanas, sugar, former nr1 cashew nut world exporter, cotton, sisal, tea,... In those bars there were additional tables just for people to put the uneated ''meals'', coz they wanted only, to drink 3, 4 or more beers.
The exports were going to GDR, USSR and other communist countries as a thank you for helping in the war for the liberation and those, were re-exported as own products. In exchenge Mozambique would get some Agro Equipment, so obsolete that they would be parked coz there was no money for parts - sometimes, parts like air tire valves.
Unbelievable. Really, I wouldn't believe it if I wouldn't have been there.
We could not joint more than 3 or 4 friends in public places otherwise we were risking to be called a reaccionary group and be jailed.
I was arrested because I passed in front of the president's house with hands with my wife, a black mozambican; the gard didn't like it and abandoned his post to arrest us. Luckily she was the daughter of the Mayor and after 2 hours the chief's gard released us, after some calls. We had gone to a cinema and we were walking to her father's to pick up our baby 6 months old or so.
One day I had a tremendous head-ake, I went to 5 Chemistries and couldn't get an aspirin. On the other hand we would pay, one time, something like 0,23 CENTS of a USDollar for any appointment with any doctor, and nothing else more, even if we would get operated and to remain in the Hospital for convalescence.
Because there were no private schools the teachers were taking money to aprove your examinations in Mid-High School after 1986, after Samora Machel, the president, died and, after the FMI got in and made them to change the policy.
Me and some friends we believe he was killed by a kamikase russian pilot because he was turning to the West. Until today the crash of his airplane is not clear.
This is a bit of my experience with communism, I could write for hours...
Now you can evaluate what is the contribution of this system to the mankind.
