I used to work in a restaurants, and that is a very valid concern. I have sent meals back, but on the rare occasion when that happens, I don't ask for it to be replaced, just taken off the bill. I make it very clear that I don't want anything else. I figure it won't kill me to skip a meal, but it will bother me wondering what they did to my food!

I've often sent a meal back due to either, the order was wrong, overcooked, undercooked, or unbelievably inedible. I do not ask for a replacement, just have the meal taken off the bill and I'll sit there until everyone else has eaten. Later I'll order dessert w/everyone else.
I always eat a recommended restaurant. If I'm traveling, I always look for the place where the locals eat.

Yes, some years ago I think the res truant was in the Royal Forest Hotel which may be closed now. My wife and I both order chicken Kiev's as the menu was fairly mundane and a bottle of wine. We waited so long for the meal to come that twice I called a waiter over and asked how much longer it would be. It was not very busy and some of the waiters and staff had congregated close to the door of the kitchen and were chatting to each other. When it the meals finally arrived the Kiev's were black and burnt on the bottom. I refused to accept them and got up and left, I said I would pay for the wine that we had drunk but they did not charge me for it.

The last time I sent a meal back is when I found hair on the food, and I did not have to worry what they may have put in it , I just told them that I don't want any more food from them god knows what else you may have in it

Yes, I've sent a meal back. I had ordered a barbecue item from Applebee's; it was burnt on the outside and frozen on the inside. It looked terrible, tasted terrible and I asked for the manager. I asked her to look at the plate, see if she could find any heat from the plate and if she would eat it. I almost didn't complain but my husband agreed with me and encouraged me to point it out.
I was very polite about it and didn't make a scene. I wound up ordering something completely different, and didn't have any concerns about the food being tampered with. The restaurant is in a very small town, and news of poor service or bad food travels fast!

Yes, I've sent back under cooked steak, spoiled fish, and a salad with ladybugs in it. Did I worry about if the kitchen staff did anything to the food? No, because these are places we frequent often except the seafood restaurant, which closed.

Yes, I've sent my meal back a few times, for the food not being prepared correctly or was cold. I don't worry about the back of the house folks doing anything disgusting.

Wow, what kind of places do you eat at? As a Sous-Chef I'm actually a little offended! In all my years of cooking, I have NEVER done anything to any food. I don't even let my guys joke about something like that, it's not something that's funny at all.
Sometimes food just gets sent back, it could be the fault of the kitchen, the server or (surprise!) the guest. I know that my kitchen is not going to do anything to it, or I will fire them on the spot. Unfortunately, it's just part of the job.

My family met for breakfast at the well known Fox and Goose in Sacramento, which was one of my favorite pub/restuarant breakfast places. This was 2 years ago. My stepmother sent back her potatos that were cold and they came back hot with
a SPIT in them. She recently told me of this. However, at the time she told nobody because she didn't want to cause a scene . She said it was so obvious and of course she did not eat them. I will never eat there again
the really sad part is that she was very nice to the waiter about it.
