I've started a ton of fires. My brother and I used to have this club called 'the Arsonists'. Our speciality was starting fires, although we would try to put them out by ourselves, so we weren't completely bad.
The best fired we ever started, was in a wheat field. Our house was a little bit in the country-ish part of town, so we had a small field next to our home.
We would go out there, high in the wheat and play with matches, candles, and lighter fluid. One day, we decided to see what would happen if we allowed the candles to touch the wheat.
That field went up so fast, you wouldn't believe it! There was absolutely no chance of putting it out. My father heard us yelling, and came out of the house with a wet blanket. Poor guy had to fight the fire all by himself. You know...luckily I don't remember the punishment we received.
As for the most recent fire I started, it was in Iraq. I was standing next to the latrine smoking when my NCO called me. So I threw my lit cig in the garbage can - full of papertowels. I realized what had happened, and wanted to retrieve it but couldn't bear to bury myself in someone else's dirty towels.
Yeah, so a few minutes later, I was inside the shop and heard all of this commotion, screaming, curse words. Finally a few people came to our shop and started beating on the door, asking for a fire extinguisher. The entire garbage can was up in flames. We had to move the porta-potty so it wouldn't go up, too. It was hilarious, because the trash can just made this huge greasy plastic puddle on the sand.
The best part? No one but my battle buddy knew it was me that started it.
