How much help can one get on returning to the UK having had to leave an African country. They are going to land with nothing to their name and are desperate to know if they can apply for any financial help and how much it would be. They were born in Britain and have a British passport but lived overseas for most of their life as parents left when they were children. Please - any definite replies will be appreciated so I can advise them.

I assume they have relatives who can 'put them up' ?

If not, then they need to find accommodation first - best would be to ask for Social Services at their 'port of entry'.

I think they should try to get the Newspapers interested in their story (and make sure they 'sell' the story and not 'give it away' ...) = this could lead onto a book deal at some stage

Assuming they are of working age, they will need to register for Job Seekers Allowance (however there may well be some Residency requirement).
