if you mean how do you patinize a metal object with fake patina, there are products that are sold at Lowes, and craft shops that can be applied to a metal object to give it a faux patina.

There are a lot of fake patina products. One being Rub and Buff manufactured by the American Art and Clay Co. It's a waxy, shoe polish type of coating and essentially you rub it on and buff it until you get the desired result. Cost about $3.00 a small tube-a little goes a long way.

there are cold patinas and hot patinas.
cold are easier to use and work well on gilded projects.
hot is better for bronze cast and such as that.

Basically you heat areas of it with a torch and brush or wipe chemicals that cause a color change - different chemicals for different metals. Then you reapply or polish areas for the correct tone and shading.

There are solutions you can buy that will give the metal piece a faux finish. I think dickblick even carries them.

Depending on the metal....
Copper - rag bleach on to it
Aluminum/or/stainless steel - rub hard w/ brillo and buff on shoe polish
