Some abdominal exercises that are often recommend for your back include little crunches, doing little crunches to each side, and laying on your back with your legs bent (pushing legs from side to side). All exercise should be as tolerated. I personally have 3 bluging disks, degenerative joint disease of the spine, and scoliosis. I'm only 21. I developed the disk problems playing competitive tennis when I was only about 15. Most pain and discomfort is reduced when I keep my muscles active. Every year or so I go back to physical therapy. I'm a pre-medical student who has worked in spinal orthopaedic research. It is best to wait for surgery until it is very necessary.

You would be a good candidate for physical therapy, especially if you can find a PT in your area who is a clinical specialist in womens health.
Go to APTA.org, click on "find a PT" and search your area.
Good luck!
