You shouldn't invest in a bass (and don't forget the amp) because your boyfriend needs a bassist. You should do it because you want to BE a bassist. Don't buy a bass just yet... borrow one or rent one (a cheap one is OK for now) and see if it's for you. Bass players don't get to shine like a lead guitarist (unless you are Victor Wooten!), so you want to be content to be in the background, setting up the groove with the drummer. It is a GREAT instrument, but do it because you like it, not because your boyfriend needs a bassist.
There is a chance that your love for the bass will be around a lot longer than your love for your current boyfriend!

You can take lessons from a bass teacher but good bass playing comes from practice and lots of listening. Do not worry about the genre of music that you're going to play initially, and try to make your notes groove. You can make even two or three notes sound cool and at the same time make 7 notes sound uncool, although you might have a good technique.
I'd recommend you to start with simpler stuff and progress with time. I started with the bass lines of the Beatles, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin before I moved on to complex bass playing techniques and it helped me a lot.
There are lots of good videos available in youtube and try listening to Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Jeff Berlin and Larry Graham who have have great technique, and their music can be funky and soulful as well. When it comes to rock bands, listen to bass-works of Dream Theater, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Mr.BIG.
The bass is an amazing instrument and you can add lots of soul to any form of music at any time. 12 is a very good age to start, so buy a Bass and keep practicing.

I think you should only doit if you know you will stick with it and if you are not sure of that, then it never hurts to try new things! You should start out by getting a tutor to help you learn. It will take some time before you can play in the band with your boyfriend because you can't learn how to play an instrument over night.

Start out learnig all your chords on the strings. Practice with slow songs at first. Play with a pick if your doing a song where you have to go fast. Get used to the space of the frets. You'll have it in no time!

Maybe look for a slightly used one. Try not to invest to much money at first. just in case you don't like it. Good luck. Playing music is the best drug out there.
