From my name no one would be surprised that my real life nickname is Turtle. My husband gave it to me, and now my mother-in-law gave us a ten gallon aquarium that once had salt-water-fish in it. We'd like to make it habitable for a turtle, but aren't sure what to do with it to help in that goal. We also aren't sure where to get a turtle, or what kind of turtle to look for. Any help? We went to Half-Priced Books to look for books on Turtles and taking care of them similar to a how-to book for snakes and aquariums but had no luck. Any books, websites and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (Note: We'd really like to use this aquarium for this since it has a stand that came with it but if it's not suitable, we need to know to make other plans for the aquarium or remove it and save up for the proper materials to place it in the same area (which is in a window but it's got blinds so sun directly on it, isn't an issue).

The easiest turtles to care for by far are box turtles. (land turtles). Water turtles are much more time consuming, and the tank will usually have an unpleasant odor, not to mention the problems of continually trying to keep it clean. Salmonella is not uncommon in water turtles, and is usually not found in land turtles. Land turtles are cleaner. You'll be much happier. I think the tank you describe is really too small for any turtle species, however.

If you want to start in a 10, you'll need to start small. By choosing a small species, it can stay in the 10 longer. Aim for a Reeves turtle, or a mud or musk turtle species.

A great site for research is http://www.austinsturtlepage.com They host an article that you would enjoy about your first turtle: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Articles/firstturtle.htm

If you want a turtle you have to get a bigger tank. Research turtles online and see what kind would be best for you.
