Rap music represents a culture, which is a mixture of people, rather then a race of people.
Yes, you will find a lot of violence in rap, you will find deception, but you will also find a lot of love and good messages.
The beat, the music of the rap culture comes of a little more aggressive then, let's say pop music which most of the time will portray and send the same message, but because the music tends to be slightly more melodic, it comes acorss as softer.
I don't have a pecific genre of music that I listen to, I listen to everything, really everything. From Rap to Classic rock I will have my favorites. I am white and I grew up in a mixture of cultures where it has allowed me to appreciate all sides.
Take punk music per example, which among I can use as an example Marlyn Manson..... What kind of message does he portray? Kill yourself and hate the world? Is this type of music that only whites listen to? Is Rap's violence only associated with blacks? In bothe cases, I say no, rather, whatever you, as an individual will associate to.
On the other hand, if you have been brought up in a mostly rap culture, you will tend to listen and assicate to it more then punk.
Even these days, we've seen P. Diddy mix punk and rap, however, what did the lyrics say?
Each music genre has it's style and like I said, hurt, love, hate, deception are all part of these songs, it's just the way they come accross and how that that make you feel.

I love all music types..I will not let that stereotype involve me..Just because I am white doesn't mean that I sit around all day and listen to country music..about someones dog and ex and pick up truck! And I have plenty of black friends that don't sit around all day listening to rap.
As far as rap goes..I love it! I think it is great to be able to speak you mind in a song form... ..Of course this is why everyone likes rap music!Everyone is so forward about their lives and what they have been and now are becoming!
I think it was well over due for this country to start publicly seeing what has been going on in the black community of music for years!

probably for the same reasons that you like rap, too. I like to listen to a little of everything myself, including some hip hop/rap.
Sometimes the lyrics are especially clever. They tend to have an honesty that isn't found in 'white' music. That can be refreshing at times.
I esp liked Kanye West for the honesty of his lyrics [moreso 1st album, tho].
Why do you like country music? Probably the reasons why you like country music and the reasons why some white ppl like rap are similar. By that I mean, you've probably lived in the South for at least a little bit, or were somehow exposed to it in whatever culture you are from.
Likewise, most rap is heavily marketed at white kids thru MTV. Likewise, white ppl encounter black culture and develop an interest in the music.
I think one can learn to love any kind of music if you're just exposed to it enough. So, white kids exposed to enough rap music = rap fans.
Likewise, a black female like yourself exposed to enough country = a country fan.

BLESS YOU GIRL!
I was a music education major in college and I played rock in a band in high school and I even played country a few times in my youth but in order for me to like music, I have to be able to understand what they are saying. I know, I'm white and I'm 50 years old with a hearing problem but I still can't understand what they are saying. I like the beat of a few rap songs but there are too many made up words that I don't know.
I love it when someone thinks a little like I do and to you I say:
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY
Smack
There's a kiss for you. :-)

I think a lot of rap... just like a lot of pop music this day... is just a way of making money... it's a cash cow... just like Britney and the boyband thing was.... there is some good rap and bad rap... just like in any other genre of music... my personal favorite is Tupac... his music had a story behind it... it came from personal places in his life... it wasn't just put out there strictly for commercial value... I also like Eminem... his comes from some very dark and often scary places in his life as well ... but there is some rap that is just cool to listen to because I like the music and the beat... I honestly don't even listen to the words.. and when I finally do... I am appalled by what I hear... it just depends on the artist as to what they are trying to portray with their music and each person has their own personal interpretation of music... what speaks to me might sound like garbarge to you...
