heat is measured in calories or joules. A calorie is the amount of heat it takes to heat up a gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. When water is frozen as ice it take rather a lot of heat to melt it. This is called the "heat of fusion" I think it takes about 80 calories to melt one gram of ice - that is, you start with ice that is at 0 C and you end up with water at 0 C. In order to melt from ice to water you have to put in 80 calories of heat (notice that you are adding heat but the temperature doesnt change. Once the ice is melted and you have water, then one calorie will increase its temp by one degree.

I am not sure about the exact amount of calories but you can check it by googling for the heat of fusion of water.

How fast do you want it to melt? I know you can throw an ice cube into molten iron and cause an explosion. It will sink below the surface of the metal and turn instantly to steam pressure and blow the surrounding molten metal out away from it.

But then you don't want to be standing too close to it when that happens. The temperature of the iron at 2950 degrees will melt flesh all the way to bone before the pain reaches the brain.
