Does the day of Valentines have some history behind it? Why is it so important, don't get me wrong I like Valentines day, but I always wondered what made this day so special?

I just read this a while ago. I don't know if it is actually true or not, but sounds good to me...
"On this day Valentine was beheaded after he secretly performed marriages for Roman soldiers, which was forbidden by Emperor Claudius. He left a note, 'Your Valentine', and a yellow crocus to his love, Claudius' daughter, before his execution."
As I said, I don't know if it is true but it sure sounds good to me.

The holiday is named after two Christian martyrs, both who were named Valentine.

In ancient Athens (Greece), the period between mid-January and mid-February was the month of Gamelion, dedicated to the sacred marriage of Zeus and Hera.

In the year 496 the Pope at the time declared that the feast of St. Valentine would be on February 14.

And finally, as mentioned above, before St. Valentine was martyred for being a Christian he passed a love note to his jailer's daughter that read, "From your Valentine."
During a ban on marriages of Roman soldiers by the Emperor Claudius II, St. Valentine had also secretly helped arrange marriages.
