Hi, a chromosome is composed of a one complete, very long, molecule of DNA. This molecule is composed of double stranded DNA wound into a double helical structure.
As the cell prepares to replicated and divide it will make a copy of each of its DNA so that each chromosome is composed of two molecules of DNA. Each molecule is called a sister chromatid and they are joined at the centromere. These will seperate, one into each daughter cell, during division.

There are two strands of DNA (they pair together to form the double helix) in each chromosome assuming they are not damaged. The number of chromosomes varies depending on the species and whether you're looking at a reproductive cell or not.

Each chromosome is made up of 2 chromatids (so 2 DNA molecules). A chromatid is a double helix DNA molecule wound around several histone proteins therefore each chromosome has 2 molecules of double stranded DNA. single stranded DNA does not exist unless it is in the process of replication and even then it is only for a time long enough to replicate itself.

One single DNA strand is compressed to form a chromosome. DNA is a double helix, but after it is compressed it doesn't look like a ladder any more.
