I used ICQ in the early 90's, now it obsolete and most use MSN messenger, AOL's AIM, or Yahoo Messenger. Google released recently Google Talk which used Gchat.

Trillian, as mentioned above works well with all of the messaging programs. Also GAIM, an open source client will work with all the different chat clients. Both are free, Trillian doesn't work with Gchat(Jabber) without paying for the Pro version of Trillian.

I would not use ICQ if you don't have to.

I'm using Trillian, wich is able to talk to ICQ, AOL IM, Yahoo IM, MSN Messenger and several other Chat programs.

I don't use the original ICQ for a long time now, as it has too many features, that I don't need and therefore only takes up unnecessary space.
