Write what he is good at, even though it might not be the current vogue, and wait for fashions to change...or, write simply to please the market and sell?

What is the best course of action in your view? I think that I'd like to write what I am good at and give it 100%, rather than giving 50% to something I'm not really feeling. I may not make a big name for myself or lots of money, but at least it is good quality literature.

Thanks!

Feel free to look at my 360 page to learn a little more about me- I am new to this site and not very good with technology so it is very brief and simple, but I am slowly building it up! Please leave a comment or add me as a friend if you're interested in writing!

A writer has to feel that he is compelled to put the words on paper regardless of the subject or the rewards.

Some would advise you to write what you know about. I say if you have an intense imagination you should go with that.

The written word is what makes the world. What would Actors, Politicians, Researchers, Education and those who read for pleasure be without it?

Good luck in your endeavors.

As published author I can give you some advice.
First you need to remember that in order to get your book accepted it matters little what the subject content is.What is of paramount importance is that you have something marketable. In other words a book from which a publisher can identify making money.
The quality of writing is secondary to this.Publishers are businesses the same as any other industry and that is often lost on authors seeking to get into print.
Look at what is being trotted out at the moment.Endless crap from so-called celebrities writing about their days in rehab.
This is not by any stretch literature nor is it,to my mind interesting reading but the sad fact is that there is a mass market for this and that is why it is published.
You are right to choose subject matter that you know about.
It will make your content more authentic and your knowledge will
be communicated to the reader.
In answer to your question if you wish to write for pleasure then you may write about what you wish.If you wish to write for money then sadly you will need to prostitute your literary principles

My opinion is to write what you like or know.
You have already answered your own question...my experiance is to never hold a job or a passion if your heart is not in it.

This includes what you do for a living...why go to work every day if you don't like it or in some cases hate it.

Your writing will sing if it is from your own experiance, but this doesn't mean it has to be the genre that you write in.

For example, you can still write about werewolves even if you have never seen one, just mix your own experiences into the story.

The greats, the ones that write for a living, do this all of the time. Stephen King wrote "Carrie" after helping a school janitor who was his friend clean a female bathroom while being a Highschool English teacher.

Just read about your sailor character. He sounds interesting - made me want to know where he was and in what time period etc. Regarding the above I always go with what I feel strongly about. Never ever go with passing trends because that's just what they are...passing. Good luck with the writing.

Write about what interests you and keep doing it everyday. You have to start out small, so don't think you're all hotstuff too soon. Start out with a town newspaper and make your way up to the top.

A good way to start is to write about what you know - familiar scenes - characters from people you know, places where you have been. You can't go wrong if you enjoy writing it - people will enjoy reading it, Good luck.

Write what you know, but expand what you know too. Go places, do things you wouldn't normally do. Don't sell out to what's in fashion it is a fast track to disaster.
