Knowing is the first step. Good job. Seek out a therapist that you can trust, and you will be well. Depression is never easy. But you can and will get through it.

Try this website: www.psychologytoday.com
Many work on sliding scales, or if you have financial difficulties, check with your local town to seek free counseling.

If you cannot go to counseling, often times there is a crisis hotline in most areas where you will have someone you can talk to. I give you alot of credit for admitting you need help and recognizing the problem.

Unfortunately, if depression were as easy to treat as "just get up off your butt and go get help", we'd have a lot fewer depressed people around. One of the characteristics of depression is that it can become almost immobilizing. But if you know you are depressed and you know that you need help, you need to first make an appointment with your own physician to discuss it. Sometimes depression has its origins in a medical disorder. Once your medical doctor rules out a physiological origin of your depression, you can discuss with him/her your need for further treatment for your depression. Often your primary care physician can begin you on a course of antidepressant medications, which typically take several weeks to become effective, and refer you to a psychiatrist for follow-up and to ensure that your medication dosage is sufficient. Primary care physicians tend to prescribe psychiatric meds at the lower end of the effective range so the psychiatrist can adjust the dosage or recommend a more effective medication. The psychiatrist can then refer you to a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist for psychotherapy. The most effective type of psychotherapy for depression (and most other disorders) is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. It combines activity with insight, doesn't waste time with all the Freudian psychobabble of what went on when you were two years old, unless what happened, such as abuse, when you were a child is relevant to your present mood disorder.

Good luck with getting help to treat your depression.

If you know you need help, seek it! If you are looking for some literature to help you find your path, I read in my husbands Men's Health magazine (march 2007) about men's depression. There is a bounty of information in that particular issue on that subject. But, most importantly, make sure that you contact your doctor. As the article stated to my surprise, depression in males is actually a lot more common, and much harder to diagnose than it is in females. At least you have acknowledged step one. Good job there! Just make sure you follow through and get the appropriate treatments. good luck, get well soon :)

First, make an appointment to see a doctor, who will diagnose whether you are suffering from clinical depression, in which case medication may be necessary, for a time. Then visit: www.depression.com/- and view the blogs of Shan Eris on "tackling depression" at www.myspace.com (http://www.myspace.com/7087317) and check out your library's medical & psychology sections.
