We already pay stupid amounts of tax to use sub-standard roads in the U.K. We also already pay by the mile (fuel duty! the more miles you do, the more fuel you use and the more tax you pay).

I worked out based on proposed “pay buy the mile” it will cost me £14 per day to go to work and back, this on top of the £580 per month Income tax and £290 NI. It’s going to cost me £1150 for the privilege of working hard for a month. (These calculations are approximate and I know “we are all in the same boat”) I suppose I could sit on my butt all day at home and get paid for but that’s one for another day!

Obviously this can’t go ahead so what I would like to propose is that nationally we have one day where we do not use our cars at all!! This would of course require massive public support but I think it would cost the fools in supposed power an awful lot of cash and make them listen. It might also get us some fresh air and keep the tree huggers happy.

you can’t fix the ozone with taxes

you can't stop them, you have to pay...

in the short and medium term that is...

in the long term you need to lobby your MP for either reduced taxes or vastly (and I mean vastly) improved public transport services...and I really do mean vastly improved...

I mean, how can they expect people to take the bus when they don't live on the bus route, or the bus only goes by once every 2 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays...

I can understand that being a possible option in the large towns and cities, but in small towns and villages it's virtually impossible to avoid using a car.

With the huge amount of money paid in car taxes, it's amazing that there's been virtually no improvement in public transport... so where is that money going?

BTW, I don't agree with everything you say, in fact the roads in the UK are on a par with most of Europe, crap compared to Luxembourg, and heaven compared to Belgium or the US ...

Here is my idea - if they want people to take a bus, make sure there is a viable public transport option ... that means it goes past 4 or 5 times an hour...

Anyone who has no alternative to a car should pay less road and fuel tax.

Those that do have alternatives (good reasonable ones that is) can pay...

but what do I know - I don't even drive, and it's none of my business anyway as I don't live in the UK, I live in Luxemboureg where we pay no taxes and the sun always shines...

Labour seem to think of that they might tax something do no longer they? I artwork in 2 jobs - one significant activity 37 hour week at widely used tax fee, eg., tax code 504. on the different activity this is barely 13 hours each week I pay the hassle-free fee code at 22%. i can not comprehend why i'm getting penalised for working longer hours to pay my charges and that they tax me to the hilt. With those new street tax's i'm gonna be in a cardboard field yet then they are going to tax me for that !! Time for anyone to vote out labour!!!! Gary H - the buses in Bristol are too costly. they have in simple terms positioned up their expenses in January via fact they did no longer have sufficient shoppers. they have not got sufficient shoppers via fact they fee too lots!

V good question, and i have to say i kind of agree with Sarah.
If you manage to get the support, i would gladly not drive for a day to prove a point.
A good solution would be to improve the public transport, buses by me look like an asbo day trip!!!!
Also stop people using a 4x4 to pick little jonny up from school.

The first thing to do is sign the petition. Next lobby your lcal MP I suppose. Demonstrations are another way of voicing discontent and at the next election use your vote to get Labour out of power!

Who pays? Not Company car drivers or Government officials in their posh cars.
It's Joe Bloggs again. You and Me.
The Germans have the right idea. ALL trucks using their motorways pay about 34p/kilometre. They wear out the roads - make them pay.
This particularly applies to foreign trucks who clog our roads at times when they are banned from using their own.
Ban trucks from the roads from 06.00 to 10.00 and 16.00 to 19.00 that would cure congestion!

Sell your car, quit work and go on the dole. If everyone does it, then the government will have to change cause no one has money to pay taxes.

I wouldn't worry too much about them pricing you off the roads. I think this shambles they call a government is pricing everyone out of existence ! ! ! ! !
