The mission is a great neighborhood simply because it isn't touristy! There are lots of great shops, clubs and restaurants along Valencia [runs parallel to Mission]between 15th and 21st as well as along Mission street.

In additon there are amazing murals scattered throughout the mission. City Guides offers free walking tours of the Murals and the Mission: http://www.sfcityguides.org/descriptions.html#Anchor-MURALS-43793

Enjoy!

Not your typical tourist, it's really more of a residential neighborhood. If you like seeing how people live in the places you visit, you might find it interesting. There is also a lot of good food there.

No, it's not too interesting for a tourist. It's a residential area. But nearby is my favorite restaurant on the entire planet: http://elmansour.com/
