Depending on the dealer/shop, most places won't even look at you if you have your own parts because that is where they make about 1/3 of their profit. Some independent shops will allow it but charge a extra fee, even though you got the parts at the same place they would have.

Sears will not install any outside parts at all. Many new car dealers will however install parts that you have purchased from the outside provided the part is the same quality they use. I personally had a complete rear drum brake job done at the local Ford dealership last summer. I purchased Wagner brake drums from a local speed shop. Wheel cylinders brake shoes and a spring set from Car Quest. I think the reason they allowed me to do this, the dealership had none of these items on their shelves. Carrying a stock of Ford parts is dead money hanging around. However if you plan to trick up your car with any non stock performance parts the dealer would certainly show you the exit door. The new car dealer could not guarantee their work and would risk a black eye if you parts caused an accident do to a failure of non standard replacement parts.

A lot of repair places will NOT let you get the parts and have them do it. I was told once that I got the parts, so I had to do it.
