I know for certain the Beatles had hidden messages in some of their songs. The ones I know of weren't backwards, they were just really quiet in the background. The Beatles did use backwards recorded guitar (I'm Only Sleeping, Tax Man) and backwards recorded singing (Rain) sometimes, so it might be true that they had backwards hidden messages--their producer George Martin was a really smart guy and he encouraged them to use all kinds of sounds in the recordings, and of course, the Beatles were very creative.
Hidden messages I know of: On the album Seargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the song "Seargent Pepper" has two versions, at the beginning of the second version, somebody is counting "one, two, three, four" at the same time, somebody else is saying "you're going to die." On the same album, the song "Good Morning" there is a quiet repeated voice that says "you want to get this." The song "Within You, Without You" has a track of a crowd of people laughing at the end of it. "Lovely Rita" sounds like a guy having an orgasm at the end, but it's pretty obvious. The song "Strawberry Fields Forever" (not on the Sgt. Pepper album, recorded as a single and later released on the American version fo the "Magical Mystery Tour" album): there are some strange musical sounds at the end of the song, then a faint voice that seems to say "I buried Paul." Listen for yourself; the voices are there. I have heard other voices in Beatles songs, especially the Sgt Pepper album, but I can't understand what they are saying.
Some people say "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" stood for "LSD"--John Lennon denied it, saying he got the idea from a picture drawn by his son. It's hard to tell, because John liked to play jokes on people. The lyrics sound like hallucinations, so it seems reasonable to me that it was about LSD.
Other times the Beatles had apparent hidden messages on album covers and so on; especially for the "Paul is Dead" hoax.
